China urges Japan to 'earn trust' of neighbors, international community

Japanese attempt to revise its constitution has 'received constant attention from Japan’s neighbors in Asia and the rest of the world,' says Beijing

ISTANBUL (AA) - China on Wednesday urged Tokyo to earn the trust of neighbors and the international community after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi expressed a desire for revision to the country's constitution.

"The issue of Japan’s attempt to revise its Constitution has thus received constant attention from Japan’s neighbors in Asia and the rest of the world," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said during a regular news conference in Beijing.

He said Beijing urges the Japanese side to "deeply reflect on its history of aggression, heed the call for peace from its people, stick to the path of peaceful development, and earn the trust of its Asian neighbors and the international community through real actions."

Takaichi on Monday expressed her desire to amend the country’s constitution during a campaign speech in Niigata prefecture, according to Nikkei Asia.

Japan’s pacifist constitution, adopted after World War II, established an exclusively defense-oriented security policy.
