China's top diplomat calls on SCO countries to strengthen mutual trust, cooperation

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states to strengthen mutual trust, equality and win-win cooperation in the face of growing global challenges, the Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

Chairing the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Tianjin, Wang emphasized the group’s founding “Shanghai Spirit” — rooted in mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality and consultation — as essential to navigating a shifting global landscape marked by geopolitical turbulence and economic uncertainty.

"The world is becoming more multipolar and economic globalization is deepening, and the global South is growing significantly. At the same time, hegemony and power are going against the trend, protectionism is surging, and regional conflicts are emerging one after another," he said.

"Under the new situation, member states should form a further consensus on strengthening the construction of the SCO in a responsible attitude towards history and the future," he added.

Wang noted the SCO’s growth over 24 years into a key force for regional stability and development.

He proposed five key principles for the SCO’s future, including security cooperation, inclusive development, good-neighborly relations, multilateralism and defense of global justice.

Wang also announced that the SCO leaders' summit will be held in Tianjin from Aug. 31 to Sept. 1, with more than 20 heads of state and leaders of international bodies expected to attend.

The foreign ministers also signed several key resolutions in preparation for the summit.
