KIGALI, Rwanda (AA) - Burkina Faso’s Health Ministry announced Tuesday that one case of cholera was detected in the eastern part of the country.

The patient is a 46-year-old truck driver of Malian nationality who entered from Niger where a cholera epidemic is currently raging, the ministry said in a statement.

He was admitted to the Tanwalbougou Health and Social Promotion Centre where he was quickly attended to by a team that suspected cholera and transmitted the information to various levels of the health system.

The diagnostic and management system was immediately implemented and contacts with the patient were identified for monitoring purposes.

The patient is in stable condition, according to the ministry that appealed to the public to observe hygiene and sanitation measures to prevent the spread of the disease.

It also warned against self-medication in case anyone falls sick.

Niger’s Health Ministry announced last week that 213 cases of cholera, including 12 deaths, were recorded in the Zinder, Dosso and Maradi regions.
