Sudan ravaged by fighting between army, paramilitary RSF since April

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) – Violent clashes resumed on Wednesday between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group after the expiry of a 3-day cease-fire, according to witnesses.

Sounds of artillery shelling were heard in Bahri, north of the capital Khartoum, with billows of smoke seen rising from the area.

Jet fighters were also seen flying in Bahri and Omdurman cities.

In a statement, the army said its forces are carrying out operations against RSF forces, without providing any details.

There was no comment from the RSF paramilitary group on the report.

The violence came shortly after a 72-hour cease-fire brokered by Saudi and US mediators ended late Tuesday.

Sudan has been ravaged by fighting between the army and the RSF since April, in a conflict that killed nearly 1,000 civilians and injured 5,000 others, according to local medics.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 2.2 million people have been displaced by the current conflict in Sudan.
