BELGRADE, Serbia (AA) - Croatia on Sunday commemorated the thousands of Croat, Serb, Jewish and Romani people killed during the Second World War.

Top Croatian officials gathered at a ceremony in the village of Jasenovac for the 78th anniversary of the breakout of prisoners from the Jasenovac concentration camp, which was carried out on the morning of April 22, 1945 by the last 600 prisoners. About 100 survived.

President Zoran Milanovic and many others laid flowers at the monument dedicated to the more than 83,000 killed in Jasenovac, the country's largest concentration camp, by the pro-Nazi Croatian regime during the war.

Jasenovac was established in 1941 by the Nazi-allied regime and was closed in 1945.
