Danish comedian gets death threats over election move

Amin Jensen says he was threatened after agreeing to run for council on behalf of Muslim-founded party

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AA) - A Danish comedian and television personality says he received death threats after becoming a candidate in coming local elections for a party founded by Muslims.

"It is not nice to be threatened with death by a psychopath," Amin Jensen told local media on Monday, adding that he now needed protection.

Jensen -- the presenter of a popular musical game show on Danish television -- is a candidate for Hvidovre municipal council, a suburb of Copenhagen, for the Nationalpartiet -- National Party -- which was founded by three Danish-Pakistani brothers in 2014.

The comedian said he had been accused of being a "traitor" on social media after he announced his nomination for the Nov. 21 elections.

Although Danish police are aware of this hate speech against him, Jensen claimed they had failed to take any measures.

The party only polled 2,221 votes out of 3.5 million in Denmark’s last parliamentary elections in 2015.

It is the first time the party is running in the local elections, in which nearly 10,000 candidates are vying for municipal council seats.
