Danish opposition calls for action after documentary claims Russia espionage operations

Documentary co-produced by public broadcasters of 4 main Nordic nations claims Russian ‘fishing boats’ near Faroe Islands carry military radio equipment

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AA) – Denmark's opposition legislators have urged prompted state action following last week's release of the documentary Skyggekrigen (the shadow war) which claims alleged Russian espionage operations in the country.

The documentary, co-produced by the public broadcasters of Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Sweden, claimed that the Russian "fishing boats" around the Faroe Islands carried military radio equipment, and that as many as 50 Russian boats have been mapped in Nordic waters for over a decade, with two of them intercepted by Norwegian authorities.

The Danish public broadcaster said the seized fighting boats – Lira and Ester – were stationed in the Faroese port for at least 200 times in 2015-2022.

Danish opposition lawmakers have expressed their serious concerns over the claims that put the national security into question. The recently built opposition alliance of blue bloc duo, Konservative and Liberal Alliance, along with the liberal Radikale, have called for prompt response.

Martin Lidegaard, an opposition MP, said the situation was unacceptable. “We cannot accept that, and I assume that we have put an end to it right away – it is obviously unsustainable,” he told the public broadcaster.

“We cannot allow the Russians to carry out that kind of surveillance in Danish and Faroese waters, and it breeds internal discord in the Commonwealth. This raises security policy questions that the Danish government has to react to and have a dialogue with the Faroese about how we handle this.”

Faroe Islands are an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, and Troels Lund Poulsen, the acting defense minister, said all Faroese fishing agreements with Russia are a Faroese matter.

“I do not have the opportunity to interfere in that,” however, he added: “But having said that, it is clear that if there is spying against the Commonwealth, Denmark also has an obligation to ensure that it does not take place. We will of course follow that, and we are already doing so today. It’s not like we’re naive.”
