Death toll in Sudan from protests against military takeover rises to 24: Medics

Local doctors committee says protester died from gunshot wound suffered on Nov. 13

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) - The death toll in Sudan from protests against last month’s military takeover of the country rose to 24 on Tuesday, according to a local doctors committee.

The independent Central Doctors Committee announced the death of the protester “who was shot in the head by forces of the coup military council on Nov. 13 and was under the care of [Al-Waad Hospital].”

Sudan’s ruling military council announced a state of emergency on Oct. 25 and dissolved the transitional sovereign council and government, hours after detaining Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and ministers in his civilian government.

It also suspended some provisions of the constitutional document outlining the political transition.

Before the military takeover, Sudan was administered by a sovereign council of military and civilian officials which was overseeing the transition period until elections in 2023 as part of a precarious power-sharing pact between the military and the Forces for Freedom and Change coalition.
