WASHINGTON (AA) - Democratic Representative Angie Craig of Minnesota was assaulted in the elevator of her Washington, DC apartment building, her office said Thursday.
Her chief of staff, Nick Coe, said in a statement, that the assault occurred around 7.15 am local time.
"Rep. Craig defended herself from the attacker and suffered bruising, but is otherwise physically okay," said Coe.
According to the statement, there is no evidence that the incidence was politically motivated.
"Rep. Craig called 9-1-1 and the assailant fled the scene of the assault," Coe added.
According to Axios, which carried a Metropolitan Police Department report of the incident, the suspect was in the lobby area of Craig's building, "acting erratic as if he was under the influence of an unknown substance."
The Minnesota lawmaker was chased into the elevator by the alleged assailant and "began to randomly do push ups," followed by "a closed fist punched her on the chin area of her face, and later grabbed her neck," according to the report.
Craig defended herself by tossing her hot coffee at the suspect.
