Denmark expresses ‘disappointment’ over Trump-Putin Ukraine ceasefire talks

Foreign Minister Rasmussen says deal exposes fundamental divide between Europe and the US over Putin’s willingness for peace

COPENHAGEN (AA) – Denmark on Wednesday expressed reservations over the verbal agreements reached between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in a recent high-level telephone call, calling it “disappointing,” state news outlet DR reported.

“I can state that nothing has come out of what the United States agreed with Ukraine, which was a 30-day ceasefire. Of course, it is disappointing. It is not a criticism of the Americans, it is just a criticism of the fact that Putin has not delivered one-to-one on what the Americans and Ukraine wanted,” said Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen.

He argued that the deal exposes a fundamental divide between Europe and the U.S, saying: “It is about Putin's will for peace. And there has been a slightly different assessment on both sides of the Atlantic.”

Rasmussen said despite the verbal agreement, overnight Russian attacks on Ukraine continued, with Ukraine reporting strikes on its railway power system, showing that Putin remains committed to war, not peace.

Denmark remains firm in its support for Ukraine, said Rasmussen, stating: “We must continue providing military aid and developing a long-term strategy for peace.”

Trump announced Tuesday that he and Putin agreed to an "immediate" ceasefire that would temporarily halt attacks "on all energy and infrastructure."

On social media, Trump said the conversation, which lasted for over two hours, was "very good and productive," hailing the limited ceasefire.

"We agreed to an immediate Ceasefire on all Energy and Infrastructure, with an understanding that we will be working quickly to have a Complete Ceasefire and, ultimately, an END to this very horrible War between Russia and Ukraine," he wrote.
