Denmark says Greenland situation 'still serious'; dialogue with US offers path forward
Premier Mette Frederiksen says next step is to begin discussions 'in the more general diplomatic and political track'

GENEVA (AA) - Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Friday that the situation surrounding Greenland remained "serious," but that Denmark and Greenland now had "a way" they were beginning to try out with the Americans.
Speaking to the media during a visit to Greenland, where she met Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Frederiksen was asked whether "the crisis has been called off."
"We are still in a serious situation, but now we have a way, which we are in the process of trying out with the Americans. We have all along said that we would, of course, like to make an agreement," she said, according to Danish broadcaster DR.
“I have always greatly appreciated our cooperation with the Americans. It is a serious situation when you threaten an ally," she said, describing the withdrawal of threats by US President Donald Trump as "really good."
The premier said she looks forward with the hope that an agreement can be made "within the principles that we have always stood firm on and that we will continue to do."
Reiterating Denmark's solidarity, she said, "I hope that everyone in Greenland can feel Denmark’s unequivocal, great, strong and warm support … I also hope that you can feel how Europe has chosen to stand together for Greenland."
She said the next step is to begin discussions "in the more general diplomatic and political track."
