Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is in South Africa to attend the summit, as well as the sessions held within the scope of the summit and the dinner to be hosted in honor of the leaders.
European leaders attend G20 leaders’ summit
European leaders, including those from France, Germany, Italy, and the UK, along with EU officials, will attend the G20 summit in Johannesburg, which is expected to focus on global economic challenges, geopolitical tensions, and energy security.
Discussions are also expected on the 28-point plan proposed by US President Donald Trump to end the ongoing war in Ukraine, with close attention on the participation and reactions of European leaders.
Military developments in Russia-Ukraine war
Developments along the Russia-Ukraine frontline will be closely followed as heavy drone and missile attacks continued throughout the week.
Ukraine reported one of the largest combined barrages in recent months, including strikes on Ternopil, Lviv, and Kharkiv regions, while Russia claimed it targeted military-industrial and energy infrastructure using long-range precision weapons.
Russian forces pressed advances near Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region, with localized assaults also reported around Kupiansk and the southern Zaporizhzhia front.
Kyiv, meanwhile, continued talks with the US on the acquisition of Tomahawk missiles and announced increased air defense deployments amid intensified Russian attacks on energy sites.
Diplomatic tensions between China, Japan
Diplomatic tensions between Beijing and Tokyo following remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who said that any Chinese attack on Taiwan would trigger Japan’s “collective self-defense,” – comments that drew strong criticism from China.
Takaichi and Chinese Premier Li Qiang are in Johannesburg for G20 summit, but their bilateral meeting is unlikely.
