ATHENS (AA) - An Estonian court convicted a local journalist of treason for contributing to a Russian media outlet.
Svetlana Burceva was found guilty of violating international sanctions and treason for contributing to Russian online publications by the Harju District Court and sentenced to six years in prison, public broadcaster ERR reported on Wednesday.
According to the judge’s ruling, Burceva violated an international sanction by working for the Russian Federation media company RIA Rossiya Segodnya, whose CEO, Dmitry Kiselyov, is on the list of financial sanctions.
Burceva was also accused of establishing and maintaining a hostile relationship with Roman Romachev, a reserve officer in Russian intelligence (FSB), and assisting him and the Russian organization R-Techno in nonviolent acts against Estonia's independence and sovereignty.
The court determined that Burceva committed treason on purpose, but her level of guilt was close to minimal.
