EU body backs Ukraine, Georgia, Kosovo visa-free deal
European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs says all 3 countries made progress in meeting EU benchmarks
PARIS (AA) - The European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee recommended on Thursday to lift EU visa requirements for Georgia, Ukraine and Kosovo.
The committee members adopted three motions “calling on Civil Liberties Committee to take up this recommendation, as these countries have achieved significant progress in implementing the benchmarks set for lifting visa requirements and it will promote people-to-people contacts,” according to an official statement.
In the case of Ukraine, a total of 42 votes were in favor, three against and six abstentions; Georgia’s motion was adopted with 43 votes, five against and three abstentions; Kosovo with 38 votes, seven against and six abstentions.
The motions will now be sent to the Civil Liberties Committee, where they would wait to be voted on after the summer recess.
