EU envoys voice support for 'return to constitutional order' in Sudan

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) – European Union ambassadors in Sudan on Thursday reaffirmed support for a “return to constitutional order” in the country.

A delegation of EU envoys “discussed the current crisis” in a meeting with Mariam al-Mahdi, foreign minister of the transitional government that was ousted by the Sudanese military on Oct. 25, in the capital Khartoum.

“They reiterated support for the return to the constitutional order, the need for immediate release of detainees and protection of the right to peaceful demonstrations,” the EU Delegation to Sudan said on Twitter.

Sudan has seen mass protests since the military, led by Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, seized power and dissolved the transitional Sovereign Council and government.

Before the takeover, Sudan was administered by a council of military and civilian officials that was tasked to guide the country to elections that are slated for 2023.​​​​​​​
