EU marks International Criminal Justice Day

July 17 marks 21st anniversary of adoption of Rome Statute, founding treaty of International Criminal Court (ICC)

ANKARA (AA) - The EU on Tuesday reaffirmed its support towards international criminal justice system and to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

"The European Union reaffirms its longstanding support towards the international criminal justice system and in particular its unwavering commitment to the International Criminal Court (ICC)," EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said in a statement.

Mogherini's remarks came a day before the 21st anniversary of adoption of the Rome Statute, founding treaty of the International Criminal Court (ICC) that seeks to protect people from genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of aggression.

"The EU and its Member States will pursue their work towards the universal ratification and implementation of the Rome Statute," the statement read.

It added the EU contributes each year to the promotion of international criminal justice with over €38 million ($42.6 million) since 2014.
