Euro 2016: Belgium overcome Ireland 3-0
Romelu Lukaku bags a brace to send Belgium into second place behind Italy in Group E
ANKARA (AA) - Belgium recovered from their disappointing first Euro 2016 game with a 3-0 win over Ireland on Saturday.
Belgium are among the favored teams in the championships but lost 2-0 to Italy on Monday. However, they made up for their poor start with two goals from Romelu Lukaku and one from Axel Witsel.
The result threatened Ireland’s chances of proceeding to the next round, having drawn with Sweden in their first Group E game.
A goalless first half was followed by a tidy finish from Lukaku after the restart when Kevin De Bruyne found him on the edge of the box.
Witsel headed home the second in the 61st minute and Lukaku secured his brace 10 minutes later when a pass from Eden Hazard left him one-on-one with Ireland keeper Darren Randolph.
The win pushes Belgium into second place while Ireland are bottom of the group.
