European Commission takes Hungary to court over alleged press curbs, discrimination

EU accuses Budapest of 'unjustified' restrictions on press, discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity

By Selen Temizer

BRUSSELS (AA) - The European Commission on Friday referred Hungary to the EU Court of Justice, accusing Budapest of restricting sexual rights and press freedom.

In a written statement, the commission said it "decided to refer Hungary to the Court of Justice of the EU over a Hungarian law which discriminates against people on the basis of their sexual orientation and gender identity."

It also added said Hungary had put in place "unjustified and disproportionate restrictions," on Klubradio, a broadcaster based in the capital Budapest.

The commission noted that a reasoned opinion on the matter had been sent to Hungary on Dec. 2, but the country did not address the concerns it expressed.

"This referral to Court is the next step of the infringement procedure launched by the Commission on 15 July 2021 against Hungary with a letter of formal notice," it added.

Hungary has been under criticism by the EU, which has accused the country of backsliding in democracy and the rule of law.
