'Secessionist rhetoric and actions against the territorial integrity, sovereignty and constitutional order run counter to the EU path of Bosnia and Herzegovina,' says European Council President Antonio Costa

LONDON (AA)— European Council President Antonio Costa on Tuesday reaffirmed the EU’s support for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s path toward EU membership during a visit to Sarajevo while also voicing concern over recent political developments that threaten the country’s stability.
“The EU remains committed to the European future of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” Costa said in a statement on X.
During his visit to the Bosnian capital, Costa met with members of the presidency—Zeljka Cvijanovic, Denis Becirovic, and Zeljko Komsic—as well as Chairwoman Borjana Kristo.
He stressed the importance of unity and political responsibility at a time of heightened tensions.
“I came to Sarajevo to bring this message of continued engagement, but also of concern with the recent developments in the republic,” Costa said during a press conference.
“Secessionist rhetoric and actions against the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and constitutional order run counter to the EU path of Bosnia and Herzegovina.”
He stressed the crucial role of the country's leaders in maintaining peace and advancing EU integration.
“What is important now is to ease the tensions and (for) political leaders to work together to maintain stability and security for everyone here,” he stated.
“As I made clear to the three presidents, they have a crucial role to play in maintaining stability and security for the benefit of the population and the crucial responsibility as well.”
Costa emphasized the steps Bosnia and Herzegovina must take to progress on its European path, including legal and institutional reforms.
“We need the approval of two judicial laws, the appointment of a chief negotiator, and the adoption of the reform agenda to move forward on Bosnia and Herzegovina,” he said.
He also highlighted the broader benefits of EU integration.
“I would like to see Bosnia and Herzegovina joining the other Western Balkan partners in profiting from all the opportunities offered by the EU, in particular the Growth Plan. For that, I urge the country to adopt the necessary reforms,” Costa said.
