ANKARA (AA) - Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettel said he will not race in this year's Russian Grand Prix following the country's military intervention in Ukraine.

"In my personal opinion, I woke up to this morning's news, shocked, so I don't know. I think it's horrible to see what is happening," the four-time world champion said in a news conference during pre-season testing on Thursday.

"Obviously if you look at the calendar we have a race scheduled in Russia. For myself, my own opinion is I should not go, I will not go. I think it's wrong to race in the country," Vettel said.

The 34-year-old Aston Martin driver added that he is “sad” to see what is happening in Ukraine.

"We will see going forward, but I think my decision is already made," the German driver said.

The 2022 Russian Grand Prix is scheduled to take place at the Sochi Autodrom on Sept. 25.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" early Thursday in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region.

The attack came just days after it recognized two separatist-held enclaves in eastern Ukraine, drawing international condemnation. Western leaders have responded with fury, announcing sanctions and vowing to hold the Kremlin accountable.
