Thousands more evacuated from areas burned, threatened by fires

ATHENS (AA) – Fanned by strong winds, wildfires on Wednesday continued to sweep across Greece.
On the island of Chios, the fire that erupted on Tuesday, prompting the evacuation of hundreds of people, is raging on two fronts between the villages of Spartounda and Halandra, reported the public broadcaster ERT.
In the northwestern city of Preveza, a fire is burning on two active fronts, causing serious damage to many houses and destroying much livestock and many beehives.
Speaking to the In.gr news outlet, the deputy governor of Preveza said the fire damaged agricultural crops, cars, and infrastructure.
The fire on the island of Zakynthos is also continuing to expand on three major fronts, forcing the evacuation of more settlements and tourist facilities.
In the western port city of Patras, the fire caused serious destruction in many residential areas and forestlands and also burned over 500 cars in the customs area.
The fire also suspended land and rail transportation.
