BRUSSELS (AA) – Around 100 farmers on Thursday held a protest demonstration in Brussels against the EU's flagship law to restore nature.

Farmers gathered at Place du Luxembourg (Luxembourg Square), in front of the European Parliament building, to stage the demonstration led by their unions Boerenbond and Copa-Cogega.

Causing traffic disruption by leaving their tractors on the roads, the farmers also placed mock-up livestock at the square.

Protesters were holding signs calling for solidarity with farmers and demanding that European lawmakers veto the Nature Restoration Law.

Meanwhile, some lawmakers sign a document that was drafted against the law.

According to the EU, the law, which is the "first continent-wide, comprehensive law of its kind," aims to restore ecosystems, habitats, and species across the EU’s land and sea areas.

To that end, the Nature Restoration Law calls for the restoration of at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030, and ultimately all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050.
