FBI warns of 'broad threat to synagogues' in US state of New Jersey

Agency says it is taking ‘a proactive measure with this warning while investigative processes are carried out’

WASHINGTON (AA) - The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a warning Thursday about a threat to synagogues in the state of New Jersey and asked the Jewish community to remain alert.

"The FBI has received credible information of a broad threat to synagogues in NJ. We ask at this time that you take all security precautions to protect your community and facility," it said on Twitter.

It said it would share more information "as soon as we can. Stay alert. In case of emergency call police."

"We are taking a proactive measure with this warning while investigative processes are carried out," said the agency.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said he was in touch with the state’s attorney general and its homeland security office and the FBI's field office in Newark.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and are working with local law enforcement to ensure that all houses of worship are protected," Murphy said on Twitter.

New Jersey is home to nearly 550,000 Jews.
