Fernando Alonso restores to 3rd place at Saudi Arabian GP after review

Aston Martin's Spanish driver gets his 10-second penalty overturned

By Emre Asikci

ISTANBUL (AA) – Fernando Alonso regained his third-place finish at the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix after Aston Martin requested a right of review, Formula One confirmed on Monday.

"Having reviewed the video evidence presented and having heard from the Team representative of Aston Martin and the relevant members from the FIA, the Stewards determined that there did exist significant and relevant new evidence as required under Article 14.1.1 to trigger a review of the decision, in particular the video evidence and the verbal evidence from the Team and from the FIA," F1 said in a statement.

"In the circumstances, we considered that our original decision to impose a penalty on Car 14 (Alonso) needed to be reversed and we did so accordingly," it added.

F1 also said in a statement that the Spaniard was given a 10-second time penalty but that has now been wiped, reinstating him to the third spot on the track.

On Sunday's race in Jeddah, Red Bull's Mexican driver Sergio Perez, who secured the pole position, won the race in one hour, 21 minutes and 14.894 seconds.
