KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) - A Sudanese court on Tuesday dropped a flogging sentence against nine female protesters.
The appeals court in capital Khartoum also dropped a month-long prison sentence against the protesters.
Wail Ali Saeed, a leading member of the Democratic Lawyer Alliance, confirmed to Anadolu Agency over the phone that the court has dropped the sentence of 20 lashes and one month in prison against the protesters.
“The verdict has been dropped and the nine protesters will be freed today (Tuesday),” he confirmed.
They were sentenced last week by a local court for protesting against Sudanese President Omer Al-Bashir.
The flogging sentence has sparked local and international condemnations.
Last week, the Democratic Lawyer Alliance said that 870 individuals have been prosecuted by the emergency courts that were established last February.
