Floods, landslides kill 9 more people in India's Assam state

Over 4M people affected as floods hit 33 districts, says Disaster Management Authority

NEW DELHI (AA) - Floods and Landslides in India's northeastern state of Assam have killed nine more people in the last 24 hours, authorities said on Monday.

With fresh deaths, the death toll from floods since April 6 has reached 71.

A statement issued by Assam's State Disaster Management Authority on Monday morning said in the last 24 hours, 33 districts reported floods in the state, affecting over 4 million people.

Eight people are missing in the state of Assam which has been facing floods and landslides for eight days now, the officials said.

"About 4.2 million people were impacted, out of which 186,424 people are taking shelter in 744 relief camps," the statement said, adding that 71 people have lost their lives due to floods and landslides in this season.

A K Hazzanuz Zaman, a resident of Mandia village in the Barpeta district of the state, said that floodwater has entered houses and roads are under water.

"Water entered our house three days ago. The situation is very bad. Roads are underwater and people can’t move.” Zaman told Anadolu Agency over the phone.

He said the floods have also disrupted communication services and his mobile stopped working on Sunday.

Mukibur Ali, a resident of another flood-hit Lakhimpur district, told Anadolu Agency that the situation is critical in the area. "As the water level rose, we had to leave our houses and shift to camps. For the last four days, we are living in a relief camp."

He said all the people from his village Badhakara Kachikata have left their homes.

"The Brahmaputra Rivers and a dam which is near to us are overflowing ... I haven't seen such a situation in my lifetime."
