Football fans in Serbia throw toys onto field for child survivors of Türkiye quakes

Death toll from twin earthquakes that struck southern parts of Türkiye claimed more than 46,000 lives

NOVI PAZAR, Serbia (AA) — Fans of football clubs Novi Pazar and Radnicki threw toys onto the field to show solidarity with children affected by the devastating earthquakes in Türkiye last month on Monday.

Tickets were not sold and fans were asked to come to the stadium with soft toys in the Serbian Super Liga match at the Novi Pazar City Stadium.

Fans threw the toys onto the field before to the start of the match, which ended 1-0 in favor of Novi Pazar.

Novi Pazar is the largest city in the Sandzak region of Serbia. It was established in 1459-1461 by Ishakoglu Isa Bey, the founder of Bosnia's capital Sarajevo and North Macedonia's capital Skopje.

The devastating Feb. 6 twin earthquakes have claimed more than 46,000 lives in Türkiye's southern region.

The magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 quakes, centered in Kahramanmaras province, have impacted some 13 million people across 11 provinces, including Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye, Elazig, and Sanliurfa.
