Former Tanzanian President Ali Hassan Mwinyi dead at 98

President Samia Suluhu Hassan makes announcement in televised address to nation

NAIROBI, Kenya (AA) - Tanzanian second president Ali Hassan Mwinyi died Thursday after a brief battle with cancer, President Samia Suluhu Hassan said in a televised address to the nation. He was 98.

"He passed away on Feb 29, at 5 p.m. Eastern Africa Time (GMT+3) at Mzena Hospital in Dar es Salaam while undergoing cancer treatment," said Suluhu. "He had been battling cancer since November last year. In honor of his memory, I declare seven days of mourning, during which flags will be flown at half-mast starting from Friday."

Born May 8, 1925, in Kivure in the Pwani Region, Mwinyi dedicated his life to public service and played a pivotal role in shaping Tanzania's political landscape.

Before he became president, he served in various governmental capacities, including Minister of State in the President's Office, Minister of Defense and National Service and Minister of Home Affairs.

He pursued policies aimed at fostering social cohesion and promoting economic growth, laying the groundwork for Tanzania's continued progress.

Throughout his presidency, Mwinyi advocated for regional cooperation and played an instrumental role in mediating conflicts in the East African region.

His diplomatic efforts contributed to stability and peace across borders, earning him respect at home and abroad.

In his later years, Mwinyi remained an influential figure in Tanzanian politics, offering guidance and wisdom to successive generations of leaders.
