Becker leaves for his native Germany, his lawyer says

ANKARA (AA) - Boris Becker, a six-time Grand Slam champion in men's tennis, was freed from a UK prison to return to his native Germany, his lawyer said on Thursday.

In a statement, Christian-Oliver Moser said Becker "was released from custody in England and has left for Germany today."

Moser added that the 55-year-old "served his sentence and is not subject to any penal restrictions in Germany."

The former Wimbledon, Australian Open, and US Open champion Becker served eight months of his two-and-a-half-year sentence. He was jailed in April for concealing assets in his 2017 bankruptcy.

The former world No. 1 had been living in the UK since 2012.

Following his retirement, Becker had several endeavors such as tennis punditry and coaching Serbian superstar Novak Djokovic for three years (2013–2016). Djokovic, who is still an active player, has 21 major titles.

During his tennis career, Becker bagged six Grand Slam titles, including three Wimbledon championships in 1985, 1986 and 1989.
