Former Turkish Cup champions Trabzonspor reach quarterfinals

ANKARA (AA) - Nine-time Turkish Cup winners Trabzonspor qualified for the quarterfinals in the domestic competition, beating lower division club Altas Denizlispor 2-1 on Wednesday.

Huseyin Turkmen scored the opener for Trabzonspor in the eighth minute in the western province of Denizli.

Denizlispor leveled the match in the 58th minute as Mustafa Cecenoglu scored from a narrow angle.

Trabzonspor's Ivorian winger Jean Evrard Kouassi scored on his debut to bring a 2-1 victory for his club.

The 27-year-old had a through ball to finish in a one-on-one in the 77th minute.

Kouassi left China's Wuhan FC to join Trabzonspor in January.

So Trabzonspor eliminated Denizlispor in the Turkish Cup last 16.

Trabzonspor last won the Turkish Cup in 2020.

On Wednesday, Fraport TAV Antalyaspor beat Atakas Hatayspor 2-0 to march to the Turkish Cup quarterfinals.

Demir Grup Sivasspor also made the last eight with a 4-2 win against Royal Hastanesi Bandirmaspor on the same day.

The last 16 phase will conclude after Thursday's matches.

Defending winners Besiktas will face Goztepe in Istanbul and Aytemiz Alanyaspor will play against Adana Demirspor at home.

Gaziantep FK, VavaCars Fatih Karagumruk, Yukatel Kayserispor, Demir Grup Sivasspor, Fraport TAV Antalyaspor and Trabzonspor qualified for the quarterfinals.
