Former Turkish premier tests positive for COVID-19

Binali Yildirim says his condition is stable, is in quarantine at home

ANKARA (AA) - Former Turkish prime minister Binali Yildirim on Thursday said he and his wife have contracted the novel coronavirus.

Yildirim tweeted that he and his wife Semiha Yildirim, due to a general feeling of discomfort, got tested at the Ankara City Hospital.

He said that although the results came positive, their condition is stable and the doctors have advised quarantine at home.

The lawmaker from Izmir urged the citizens to comply with health guidelines set by the government.

Yildirim, 64, served as the 27th prime minister of Turkey from 2016 to 2018 before the country adopted a presidential system following a public referendum.

He was also the speaker of the Grand National Assembly from 2018 to 2019.

Amid a relative increase in the number of virus cases, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca has urged the public not to abandon measures such as maintaining social distance and wearing a mask.
