HARARE, Zimbabwe (AA) - Police in Zimbabwe on Monday arrested the son of former President Robert Mugabe over allegations of malicious damage to property.

Robert Tinotenda Mugabe, 31, is accused of destroying cars and other property over the weekend in the capital, Harare.

His arrest comes a day before the commemorations of his late father’s late birthday.

“The Zimbabwean Republic Police confirms that Robert Tinotenda Mugabe (Junior) has been arrested on Malicious Damage to Property allegations after a complaint by his friend Nkatazo Sindiso aged 31, that he destroyed property worth US$12,000 at a house number 3A Verd Lane, Strathaven, Harare,” said a statement by the police.

According to the police, Mugabe will appear in court soon.

Mugabe, who was never arrested during the tenure of his father, is believed to have been acting with impunity while even after the resignation of his father in November 2017.

In August 2017, his mother Grace Mugabe was caught up in a legal and diplomatic war after she allegedly assaulted and injured Gabriella Engels in a South African hotel.

According to media reports in South Africa, four months earlier junior and his young brother are alleged to have been whisked away into South Africa from Dubai on allegations of drug use.

The former president ruled South Africa for several decades until his resignation in 2017.
