ANKARA (AA) – The number of first-time applications for asylum in France rose to 137,046 in 2022, the provisional figures by the Interior Ministry showed on Thursday.
It includes the first-time applications at the Dedicated Asylum Application Service Center (GUDA).
The 2022 figure was slightly less than that of 2019, which saw 138,420 applications.
When all types of asylum applications are combined, France received a total of 154,597 applications in 2022, which means an increase of 16.5% compared to 2021.
Afghan and Bangladeshi citizens are the top two asylum-seeking nationalities.
Meanwhile, France expelled no less than 15,396 irregular migrants in 2022. It is 15% more than records in 2021.
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Twitter: "In accordance to my orders, foreigners who have committed infractions have been prioritized: 3,615 of them have been expelled in 2022, while 1,834 in 2021, so the double."
