France's Macron supports international tax on maritime transport

ANKARA (AA) - France’s president on Friday voiced support for an international tax on maritime transport.

"It is a sector which is not taxed, and there’s no reason for that," Emmanuel Macron told a news conference in Paris at the conclusion of the Summit for a New Global Financial Pact.

France has already put taxes on plane tickets and financial transactions, he said, adding that international taxes are only international if they are applied in all countries.

In this context, he stressed that key countries such as the US, China, and European countries must also adopt the same tax to make it work.

Negotiations will take place at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on whether to adopt such a tax, and the result will be seen in July, he added.

The two-day summit in Paris started on Thursday with a focus on helping the most vulnerable developing countries tackle poverty and climate change.​​​​​​​
