French authorities retaliated against racism whistleblower police chief, says ombudsman

ANKARA (AA) – A police chief who reported racism in French jails faced retaliation, including from the country's interior minister, an ombudsman in the country has decided.

In July 2020, Chief Sgt. Amar Benmohamed reported mistreatment and abuse of foreign defendants in custodial jails over their race and religion in 2017-2019.

Benmohamed told French news website StreetPress in 2020 that more than 1,000 defendants were victims of racism and mistreatment.

The officer has since been targeted by his supervisors, including from Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, StreetPress reported on Monday, citing a statement from Ombudsman Claire Hedon.

He received an administrative warning on Jan. 4, 2021, in which his superiors criticized him for reporting the incidents too late and not giving the names of certain colleagues who told him about the incidents.

"The Ombudsman's decision confirms our analysis," Benmohamed's lawyer, Arie Alimi, said. "After having stifled the racist mistreatment of the detainees, the Interior Ministry and the Paris prosecutor's office did everything possible to discredit the whistleblower on judicial and administrative levels."

Benmohamed reported that the defendants were victims of racist insults and were deprived of food and water.
