By Merve Berker
A French government spokesperson and the members of her campaign team were “attacked” as they were putting up campaign posters on Wednesday evening, the prime minister said on Thursday.
“This evening, a candidate, Prisca Thevenot, and members of her campaign team were attacked by four individuals in Meudon while they were putting up election posters,” Gabriel Attal said on X.
“Violence and intimidation have no place in our democracy,” he added. “They have no place in our Republic.”
Attal expressed his “full solidarity with the candidate and her teams.”
“Let us reject the climate of violence and hatred that is taking hold,” he stressed. “I'm calling for a start now."
The far-right National Rally led the first round of the French parliamentary elections, and the second is scheduled for July 7.
