KHARTOUM (AA) - Thousands of Sudanese protesters demonstrated in Khartoum -- and in several other parts of the country -- on Thursday, multiple eyewitnesses have told Anadolu Agency.
Protester Ahmed al-Imam said that “hundreds” of people had hit the streets of the capital, while several residential districts on the city’s outskirts had also been rocked by demonstrations on Thursday.
According to protester Nwal Ali, police in downtown Khartoum used teargas to disperse protesters, “dozens” of whom were detained by security forces, she said.
Demonstrations were also reported in the Sudanese cities of Al-Obeid in North Kordofan State and Medani in Al-Gazeera State.
Sudan has been rocked by protests since mid-December, with demonstrators decrying President Omar al-Bashir’s failure to remedy the country’s chronic economic woes.
Sudanese officials say about 30 people have been killed since the protests began almost two months ago, while opposition figures put the number at closer to 50.
