German climate activists block rush hour traffic in Berlin

Last Generation activists glued their hands to roads, tires of cars to draw attention to climate change

By Anadolu Staff

BERLIN (AA) - Environmental activists blocked around a dozen roads in the German capital on Monday to draw attention to climate change and increase pressure on the government.

The activists from the Last Generation group glued themselves to busy roads in Berlin during the morning rush hour, causing kilometers-long traffic jams across the city.

Two activists stopped their van on the city's busy A100 motorway, and glued their hands to the tires, bringing traffic to a standstill for several hours.

The group said on Twitter that they returned to the streets after giving the government some “pause for thought” last week, and vowed to continue their “civil resistance” actions.

Berlin police said they have so far responded to around 10 disruptive actions, and cleared activists from the busy roads.

The protesters are heavily criticizing the German government for not taking serious measures to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit), but further investing in fossil fuel infrastructure, endangering the future of humankind.
