Germany condemns Israeli demolition of UNRWA compound in East Jerusalem

BERLIN (AA) - Germany on Tuesday condemned the demolition of buildings on the compound of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in occupied East Jerusalem by Israeli forces.

The German Foreign Ministry said in a statement posted through US social media company X that UN facilities must be protected, and Israel has legal obligations under international law that must be upheld.

“We condemn the demolition of buildings on the UNRWA premises in East Jerusalem by Israeli security forces,” the ministry said. “UN property is inviolable. We expect the Israeli authorities to comply with their obligations under international law.”

The demolition came as far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir led Israeli forces to demolish structures inside the headquarters of the UN agency in occupied East Jerusalem.

According to witnesses, Israeli forces, accompanied by at least one bulldozer, entered the compound and demolished both mobile and permanent structures on the site. They also raised the Israeli flag over the compound, replacing the UN flag.
