Germany introduces tighter security for G20

Country’s borders will see heightened security before, after July gathering

By Cuneyt Karadag

BERLIN (AA) – Germany on Monday began heightened security checks at its borders ahead of a G20 summit to be held in Hamburg next month.

An interior ministry statement said the country’s land borders would be monitored until July 11 as part of increased security.

Everybody coming from another European country will have to go through passport control. However, there will be no extra checks at airports.

Europe’s passport-free travel zone known as Schengen rules enable countries to impose border checks if they perceive a security concern.

The July 7-8 summit in Hamburg is expected to see U.S. President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
