Germany summons Russian ambassador over drone incursions into Poland

Berlin warns Moscow that it is escalating conflict in a 'dangerous' and 'unacceptable' way

BERLIN (AA) - Germany on Friday summoned Russia's ambassador to the Foreign Ministry to protest Russia's drone incursions into NATO ally Poland.

In a statement posted on social media, the ministry accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of escalating tensions in a dangerous way, risking a wider conflict in the region.

“By sending Russian drones into NATO airspace, Putin is acting in a dangerous and unacceptable way. That is why the Russian Ambassador was summoned to the Federal Foreign Office today. NATO stands united in defending our Alliance territory and our security,” the ministry said.

Earlier this week, Poland accused Moscow of deliberately violating its airspace with drones during Russia's massive overnight airstrikes on Ukraine on Wednesday. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the drones were Russian, with authorities initially recording 19 airspace violations. Polish and allied NATO forces shot down some of the Russian drones, marking the first such defensive action of this kind

Russia’s Defense Ministry denied any intention to strike targets on Polish territory during the attacks, which it claimed targeted enterprises of Kyiv’s military-industrial complex in western Ukraine. Moscow also expressed willingness to engage in dialogue with Warsaw over the incident.
