BERLIN (AA) - Germany announced Thursday it will bolster security support for its NATO ally, Poland, in response to recent Russian drone incursions.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz's spokesman said Berlin will undertake enhanced air surveillance and defense measures along NATO's eastern flank in response to the recent violations of Polish airspace.

“In addition to its existing commitments in the Baltic states and Poland, the German government will extend and expand its air policing mission over Poland,” said Stefan Kornelius. “Furthermore, the German government will intensify its support for Ukraine. Within the EU, it will work for the swift adoption of a robust 19th package of sanctions against Russia.”

The German Defense Ministry said the air defense squadron, currently stationed at Laage air base, which stands ready for air defense missions in Polish airspace, will have its deployment extended until Dec. 31. The mission was originally scheduled to end Sept. 30.

Poland, a member of the EU and NATO, serves as a critical hub for Western military aid to Ukraine.
