World witnesses range of environmental disasters including heavy rains, floods, hurricane

ANKARA (AA) - The world witnessed several unexpected environmental developments and disasters in November, including floods in Australia and Palestine, heavy rains and deadly landslides in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Italy and powerful storms in the Philippines and China as well as a hurricane in the US.

Below is a timeline compiled by Anadolu Agency:

Nov. 1:

- Heavy rainfall in Chad causes flooding that affects more than a million people and displaces tens of thousands to safer areas.

- At least 12 Indonesian sailors go missing after a cargo vessel gets caught in stormy winds and sinks off Taiwan's coast.


Nov. 2:

- A wildfire continues to burn on Mount Kilimanjaro as Tanzania deploys troops in an attempt to help firefighters and volunteers contain the blaze and save flora and fauna surrounding Africa’s highest mountain peak.


Nov. 3:

- The death toll from Severe Tropical Storm Paeng, internationally known as Nalgae, climbs to 150 in the Philippines.

- Typhoon Nalgae hits Guangzhou, China, affecting daily life as it causes a powerful windstorm and rainstorm.


Nov. 8:

- Heavy rains hit Gaza, with streets flooded in the aftermath.


Nov. 11:

- Nicole is downgraded to a tropical storm after slamming into Florida's east coast as a Category 1 hurricane, but not before leaving at least four people dead and causing a path of destruction.


Nov. 12:

- An unprecedented storm in Spain shuts down Valencia airport, leaving one person dead, thousands without power and causing significant flooding.


Nov. 15:

- Hundreds of people are evacuated in the Australian state of New South Wales, which is facing the worst floods in its history.


Nov. 17:

- Streets are flooded and a bridge is damaged in Davao del Sur municipality in the Philippines due to flash floods caused by heavy rains.


Nov. 20:

- Heavy rains in Albania bring flooding while causing temporary power outages in some parts of the country.


Nov. 22:

- Landslides in the village of Kamituga in Mwenga territory of South Kivu province in eastern Democratic Republic Congo kill eleven people, says an official.

- Heavy snowfall paralyzes the Swedish capital Stockholm as a weather warning is issued across the country.


Nov. 25:

- Many major roads in Medina, Saudi Arabia are flooded after heavy rains.


Nov. 26:

- Multiple casualties are reported and a dozen people go missing after a landslide caused by heavy rains strikes homes and streets on the southern Italian island of Ischia


Nov. 27:

- The death toll from a massive landslide that hit Italy’s southern island of Ischia rises to seven as around 10 people remain missing with hundreds evacuated from their homes.


Nov. 30:

- Strong winds and a blizzard hit the Russian city of Magadan, causing the temporary closure of some major roads.
