Greece saw warmest summer, winter in 2024

Highest temperature recorded was 44.5 degrees Celsius on island of Crete, according to meteorological service

ATHENS (AA) - Greece experienced the warmest summer winter on record in 2024, according to the country’s meteorological service.

The highest temperature of the year was 44.5 degrees Celsius (112.1 degrees Fahrenheit, which was recorded in Voukolies, located on the island of Crete, on June 13.

Also, the longest-ever heat wave in the country was recorded on July 8-23.

The lowest temperature of the year, excluding ski resorts, was recorded at minus 19.8 degrees Celsius in Neos Kafkasos, Florian, on Jan. 22.

On Dec. 1, the Simonopetra Athos peninsula saw the highest daily rainfall of the year with 435 millimeters (17.13 inches).

The highest yearly rainfall was recorded in Askyfu, Crete, with 2,160 millimeters.

Moreover, a total of nine people lost their lives because of extreme weather.
