ATHENS (AA) - The Greek island of Santorini experienced renewed seismic activity Friday after a 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck the region.

The earthquake occurred at 5.47 am local time (0347GMT) in the sea area between the islands of Amorgos and Santorini, according to the Athens Geodynamic Institute.

The epicenter was located 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) southwest of Amorgos, at a focal depth of 15 kilometers, the institute said.

No casualties or material damage were reported.

The area around the islands experienced intense seismic activity from early February to early March, prompting the government to declare a state of emergency.

The tremors and official warnings led to school closures, caused many residents to evacuate and compelled tourists to alter their travel plans.

The state of emergency was lifted earlier this month after the number of earthquakes dropped significantly.

In February, the Greek government announced plans to build an emergency escape port on the island to facilitate evacuations in the event of a stronger earthquake or volcanic eruption.
