ATHENS, Greece (AA) – Friday marked the final round of Supreme Court hearings for the appeal cases of eight Turkish soldiers, allegedly involved in Turkey's failed coup attempt in July 2016.
The cases of Maj. Ahmet Guzel, Maj. Gencay Boyuk, Capt. Feridun Coban and Sgt. Mesut Firat were taken to the Greek Supreme Court on Friday, with the prosecutor, Nikolaos Pantelis, proposing that none of them gets extradited.
A final decision for the future of all the eight military personnel will be announced on Jan. 23. However, all the Supreme Court prosecutors so far have proposed that all of the soldiers are not sent back to Turkey.
Defense lawyers were not immediately available for comment.
The eight soldiers fled Turkey a few hours after the failed coup attempt of July 15, 2016, which left 242 martyred and more than 2,000 injured.
The men arrived in Greece on a hijacked Blackhawk helicopter and requested asylum, stating that their lives would be in danger in their home country.
Turkey has repeatedly demanded the extradition of the soldiers, promising to provide fair trials.
