ATHENS (AA) – The Greek navy is prioritizing the modernization of four German-built MEKO-200 type frigates, local media reported Monday.

A team of navy officers has been tasked with examining a technical offer by a German-Dutch consortium in relation to the modernization and the navy’s general staff expects a contract to be signed by early 2024 at the latest, said the Kathimerini daily, citing senior naval commanders.

It said that due to the pressing needs for warships, the navy wants to have the first modernized frigate to be delivered by mid-2025.

According to the newspaper, the frigates will be equipped with new radars and combat management systems as well as advanced short-range ESSM Block 2 anti-aircraft missiles.

The cost of modernization of the four frigates would be around €600 million ($675 million), it noted.

On July 8, Defense Minister Nikos Dendias revealed that Greece plans to spend €11.5 billion more for 19 major procurements, including at least 20 F-35 fighter jets and modernization for 37 F-16 Block 50 aircraft.
