Greek opposition parties criticize government’s handling of foreign, arms policies

SYRIZA says country neglects domestic defense industry while Türkiye successfully improves its own

ATHENS (AA) – Greek opposition parties criticized the government Wednesday over its handling of the country’s foreign and arms policies.

Reiterating the main opposition SYRIZA party’s commitment to strengthening Greece’s military capabilities, its leader Alexis Tsipras said during a debate by the leaders of the six major political parties aired live by public broadcaster ERT that the roughly €15 billion ($16.5 billion) spent during the current government for arms programs did not contribute to the domestic defense industry.

"It is unacceptable that a program of 14-15 billion euros has not brought a single euro to the Greek defense industry while Türkiye has linked 60% of its defense to its national industry,” he said.

For his part, PASOK’s Nikos Androulakis vowed to further boost the country’s military capacity and border security.

Greek Solution party leader Kyriakos Velopoulos meanwhile slammed the government’s foreign policy positions and said that Greece should act in line with the realities of the contemporary multi-polar world.

Former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, the leader of the MeRA25 party, for his part stressed that the country cannot rely on its Western allies in case of armed conflict with Türkiye, as proved in the past.

Dimitris Koutsoubas, the leader of the Greek Communist Party (KKE), claimed that arms agreements signed with France, the US and other countries serve NATO's interests and will lead to Greece’s participation in aggressive acts that will make it a target of retaliation.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who heads the ruling New Democracy (ND) party, said the country’s arms programs were very well planned and did not diverge from fiscal rules.

He said the country had "built very powerful alliances, and the balance between Greece and Türkiye in the US Congress is leaning toward Greece.”
