Gunman kill 37 civilians in southwest Niger

14 children, 4 women injured in attack, according to local news source

DOUALA, Cameroon (AA) - At least 37 civilians were killed in an attack perpetrated by unidentified gunmen in Darey Dey in the Tillaberi region of southwestern Niger, according to media reports Tuesday.

The armed attack injured “14 children and 4 women" on Monday, local online media outlet L'Evenement Niger reported.

The outlet said the attack was carried out by unidentified gunmen on motorbikes.

Similar attacks have taken place in Niger and the Tillaberi region is one of the most affected areas.

A total of 420 civilians have been killed by Islamist groups that have also displaced tens of thousands of residents in western Niger in 2021, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said in a report on Aug. 11.

These groups "appear to be waging a war against the civilian population in western Niger," said HWR Sahel Director Corinne Dufka.
