MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AA) – Gunmen on Thursday killed four schoolteachers, two policemen and abducted dozens of students and teachers in an attack on a public school in Nigeria’s northwest Kebbi State, police said.

In a statement on Friday, Adeleke Adeyinka-Bode, the state’s police commissioner, said the gunmen stormed the Federal Government College, Birnin-Yauri, Yauri Emirate in Kebbi State.

“They opened fire on policemen around the school. During cross-fire between policemen on duty and the bandits, two policemen and four teachers died. Five teachers were taken away, but the number of students abducted are not known for now," the police official said.

Scores of people fled the area in fear after the attack, residents told Anadolu Agency. “People fear another possible attack,” said Isa Abdullahi, on of the residents in the area.

The latest incident follows a chain of recent attacks on schools in Nigeria.
